I have a 14 month old walker that trees his own coons and does a good job by his self. Here lately when hunting with company he will get struck and tree but soon as another dog opens up he leaves the tree to go to the other dog. I walked in and found the coon in the tree he was treed on. Id like to start competion hunting him but he pays to much attention to other dogs. How can i make him more independent?

I would hunt him alone. You don't want to put him in a comp hunt until he is a finished dog, and until he can get it done alone on a regular basis he ain't finished. Treeing by himself will also build confidence and independence.

I was hunting him by his self for a couple weeks and then i turned him loose with a buddy of mines dog that has won many hunts. His dog hit a track that seemed cold and my pup never barked. He went about 600 yds and fell treed and had the meat. Made me think i could maybe win some hunts with this pup. But the more i hunt him with other dogs the more he wants to follow them. I know hunting him by his self will make him more indepident but when you turn them loose in a hunt u got 3 other dogs doing their thing and round here they usally end up with a empty tree. My pup has the meat.

Ive been plesure hunting my whole life and training a dog to just tree a coon is differnt than training him to be a compition dog. I really wanna get involved in this compition hunting. Just not for sure i know what im doing.

I have noticed that the more coons u shoot out to em the more independent they get and if the other dog is finished out and ur dog goes to em don't let urs get the coon at all when he falls in with that other dog or don't even shoot it out to the other dog
