I see no problem with making a doghouse out of ur fridge. I would put bedding in it like u said. As for the issue of too hot in summer or too cold in winter, well id want it to be cool in the summer and not worry about hot in winter, because a good amount of straw and not facing the north wind and ur dog will be just fine. They are made to handle the elements. Thats why they have fur and we don't...lol I use hog huts and chains 4 right now, but i will be getting my off ground kennel build later this summer.

Just as a remark on the conversations above i have a three run kennel and each one has an old freezer a small size in each run. I live in South dakota where the temps dip down below zero quite often. U cut a 16x12 hole in your desired side of the freezer line the hole with wood so the dog does not get cut by the metal add a rubber flap for a door and too the floor for comfort these work great. The lids are all ready hinged and i put a ice cream pal of water on the motor housing on the inside and at 0 degree temps outside the water does not freeze on the inside where the dog sleeps. They are very easy to clean. The only problem with them is you will need a buddy to go pick it up with ya cause them old buggers are heavy. But most of the time they are free if you pick them up. lol.
