I'm sure this topic has been brought up and I probably passed it over while searching, but I was wondering which is best to buy the garmin alpha or astro. Obviously the alpha is more money as far as operation what is better. I am new to the sport and just want advice from you all who have had more time in than I have. Thanks

I have been in the sport for about a year and I bought the alpha. It only makes sense with the GPS and shocker in one unit. If you bought them separately it would cost the same amount. I like mine and have not had any issues with It.

You have to leave it in the truck. I don't think you can have the astro on during the hunts. Not sure about that.

Alpha collar can be on the dog but hand held has to be left in the truck. Starting jan. 1st 2014 you can have the astros with you and on. But they can not be used as evidence in scoring dispute.
Alpha is a good system but if you think you might try comps then go with the astro. After using a tracking system you will never want to be without it, especially when you're hunting a guide's land that you've never been to.
