so last night my dog runs a coon 1200 yds and trees in a giant oak den tree so I can't drop the coon on her, no prob, I dropped 20 on her last year and 6 this year, she knows what she is doing. Then, hunting her back to the truck, she strikes a track and runs it across a chest deep creek, and then runs the track for little over a mile IN A STRAIGHT LINE, and then the GPS just shows her sitting there, no treeing, no barking, just sitting. Then she comes back. What animal runs in a straight line? Is she running something into a den? She has done this since year one and she is 4 now, didn't do it at all last year but twice already this year. I can't hardly put the shock collar on her because coon go so far this time of year, she is way outta range by the time I figure out its trash and not coon.
Help!

Depending on the terrain Deer will run a straight line like that. She's probably running them until she's out of steam, resting and then coming back. Might only be running Deer she's jumped. Try taking her to an area you know there are Deer keep her in sight and see how she reacts when one kicks up. If she show's any interest then that's probably what it is. I break my hounds early of it so they don't even look at them when they kick up. In fact my dog got kicked by one this year that stepped out on a trail looking at me and didn't notice the dog was at its feet. That one I couldn't blame the dog for chasing.

I have her broke off deer, out squirrel hunting her last saturday I jumped two deer and watched her leave them alone. I about wore out the trash breaker doing it the first two years of her life but she is leavin them be. Cant make that dog tired either, it was about 25 degrees out and she was not getting over heated or tired. Will a coyote run a straight line like that? Foxes seem to circle, then line out.

I don't run yotes but I don't see why one wouldn't run straight out. I would think though that it wouldn't be consistent. You'd also find it running circles or whatever. Whatever it is sounds like its jumping it and giving it chase.

I squirrel hunt the dog too and she is totally straight in the daytime. Whatever it is, is only out at night.
