He's still extremely young. At that age any interest should be exciting. Don't expect grade A performances every night from a pup

Just keep him in the woods, don't get in a hurry, and make sure he knows when he's doing it right

When hunting young dogs you don't want to hunt them too much. I want to make them short and end AT a tree if possible. Summertime hunting is hard on dogs really hard on pups. It gets them hot and the weeds are BAD.SO they can loose interest easy if overheated.. I always chain a pup to a tree they are treeing on every tree right or wrong. Make sure no other dogs can get on the tree and hurt the pup. So chain other dogs way back from the tree. Let them tree no more than 10 min at the most in hot weather. Hunting around water is a good idea. For the dog and to get good tracks. Most pups just start at 8-12 months old. A pup that starts earlier or later wont make them any better dog.. The age a dog starts has nothing to do with how good they can be.. Also don't pet up a dog a lot at the tree.. Just a little is enough. Ive seen guys get dogs so crazy they jumped and even would bite the tree and even the guy trying to get the dog off the tree...LOL

Just be patient, as he gets better hunt him harder one step at a time, in the mean time the fall hunts will be coming up. Check out the united kennel website to check for a local club, I'm sure there will be guys there that would be happy to take you hunting and help you along the way. Don't believe everything you hear though, but think for your self. If you pay attention, read a lot and think for your self, and you will be training hounds in no time.

I have started them as old as 13 mths and 2 yrs old.
I wont take one and even try exposing it to coon until its 8 to 10 mths old.
but with any dog.. its hunting them that makes them consistent..
takes a lot of boot tracks in the woods to make one a consistent coon treeing dog night after night.
with most you will not see for sure what kind of dog you really have until its closer to being 3 yrs old and it has been hunted hard.
