I bought a 8 year old yesterday to train my young dog and I took him out tonight and he hunter for over 2000 yards and ran back and forth barking within a 100 yard radius in a creek bottom. He was all in the water so do y'all think the coon tricked him and can coon that go in the water usually out smart a dog! Boy I got him from said he trees his own coon but I'm going to take him tomorrow night and hunt him some more to see but where I hunt is very leafy and a lot of big trees so can the hard land hurt his hunting too?

Well took him tonight with my other walked make and they ran for over 700 yards and treed a big boar coon. I mean a BIG one. Do coon usually run that fast?

Well so far I have made three drops with him and he's treed 2 coons. Thinking about trying to trade him to another dog doing it on its own because he hunts too deep for where we hunt

Just because they trailed for 700 yards don't mean the coon outran them for that long. This time of year the boar coon are travelling more looking for females. This don't mean he's a deep hunting dog he's just taking the tracks he gets. If ya have a dog that's finishing tracks and treeing ya coon, why get rid of him?

My dogs are close hunters, but late in the year the tracks get harder and the follow them. They will go for a mile if they don't catch it. But come spring when it warms up they'll be back to treeing quick.

Ive never had a dog that hunts like he does but I guess your right about that. Ive made up my mind to keep him anyway. He might have a little age on him but he sure does not act like it.
