I've got a couple questions for anybody that's had some of these nice little guns. I was given a .243 for a birthday gift a couple years ago. I shot probably about 10 rounds through it without a problem. Then the last shot, the break action popped open. Not all the way wide open, possibly because I have a bipod on it so was leaning into it some, but opened hard enough I though I broke something. Since then it pops open like that only after shots probably 1-2 out of 5 rounds shot. I've read up on other people needing to send the whole rifle back to the factory and having parts swapped out or fixed but I'd rather not do that if possible so does anybody know if its possible to fix it yourself? I can't find anything that looks worn out and its really clean but there has to be something that can be changed or ground down or even padded up with welding then ground down smooth? I don't wana ruin it but any ideas on what to try?
That's my main concern but I've also got another question.

I know a lot of these guns you can change out barrels with other calibers. I've also got a h-r 20 guage that I've had a few years and was wondering how to tell if I could interchange the barrels between the .243 and 20g?

Thanks for any ideas in advance

The gun probably needs to go to a gunsmith, if that action isn't good and tight it can be very dangerous. As for the barrels I believe they will not swap from shotgun to rifle but from rifle to rifle to change caliber, and then it needs to be done by a professional if not sent to the factory. The reason being that the new barrel may well fit but the headspacing if the shell will be all wrong .

Not sure what might be wrong but you should have a gun smith take a look at it at the least, you might try taking it apart don't try disassembling the action but just remove the barrel and then take a good look at the action see if there is anything loose, might even used some compressed air or a spray nozzle directed into the action to see if anything blows out.

These guns are pretty basic and most gun smiths don't charge much to fix them if there is nothing stuck inside mucking up the works

You used to be able to get a 20 ga barrel for them but if you did nor buy it that way from the factory you had to send it in to them to be fitted due to liability issues

Thank you both for the replies. That's what I was expecting, just not what I had hoped for. I've pulled the barrel off a couple of times to clean and look around in there and everything seems clean and tight from what I can tell. I guess I've never tried comparing how it all looks to the shotgun since it should be pretty close. I just always hate having to have other people do things for me. I always like learning and figuing this stuff out for myself. But I guess it could be pretty dangerous having it pop apart in my face or anything so ill need to admit defeat early this time.

Thanks again for the replies. I appreciate your help.
