the dog will run track good and tree but when he trees he is kinda lazy until you put a lead on him then he goes nuts. is this a confidence issue and just needs to be hunted on his own and petting him up when he is treed? the dog is 3 yrs old. let me know what you think

Most dogs once you put the lead on them they will tree harder. They think your taking them away from the tree. Or chaining them back to knock a coon out..You dont want to pet up a dog alot. Just enough to get them treeing..If you pet them up alot and really get them jumping and going crazy. It will just cause problems down the road with other dogs..(A trick to get them treeing harder).Keep a small 20 foot rope in you pocket or hunting coat..Put that on your dog at the tree.He will think your going to take him off the tree..Just work him on the tree for about 10 min no more at each tree..It wont take much as he slows down treeing just pull a little on the rope then let loose....A 3 year old dog should have already been hunted alone at least 50% of the time to finnish them out...I like to single them out and hunt them alone as much as possible.Ive owned some dogs. That I hunted alone as long as a year...You really cant get a top well broke dog as long as you hunt with other dogs all the time..You also have to be carefull who you hunt with..If you hunt with dogs that have bad faults your dog will pick them up..Thats how you can get lot of (me- too) and trashy dogs...

thanks for the advice i will be hunting him by his self, picking him up this weekend and was curious of how to get him to bark a little more on tree and as far as i know he has always been ran with another dog and not singled out (until he gets here) dog is a stay put dog and i think if by his self can become a good hound and hopefully comp hunt him come late spring or early summer this coming year. and will try the rope hope it works
