i dont know that much about it, but i do know that its not too late for your dog...if hes just a year old its just now time to get him started, you probly could have started him alittle earlier but a year old is plenty young enough to learn, sorry i couldnt help more

Don't worry.Sounds like you are getting him started at just the right time.If you haven't worked him on a caged coon yet I would do that once or twice and get him fired up and then just take him to the woods with the other dogs. It's way too early to be worried about him yet.

i dont even start mine till they are close to a yr old or sometimes a little older. he is doing normal know nothing puppy stuff. just keep taking him. i would not try and "teach" him to tree. its already bred in and if your patient then once he wants a coon bad enough and knows they are in there he will go looking. he will also start treeing on them when he thinks he has the coon and he wants them bad enough. when he can move a track he can find where it climbed and you dont need to show him where the track went. the last thing you want is him to tree just because the other dogs do. just expose him to coon and teach him where to go hunting to find one and the more you can make him want one the more he will do for you. once a pup wants to dive on the coon i tie them back and don't let them have the coon just to make him want them that much more. i want to have to drag them back to the truck with them trying to go back after the coon. once he is older and treeing coon consistantly then you can break him to know what dead coon means and its all done so he will lead correctly. just make him coon crazy wanting them for now and he will do the rest.
