You cannot expect a 6 month old pup to do much of anything.... He is still a baby. Most dogs that age are to immature to start being a coon dog. Do yourself a favor bud and start with teaching that dog some obedience stuff and show him a caged coon or 2. No more than that though. Make sure he gets fired up. When he gets 8-10 months starts taking him with other solid dogs. There is a chance you may ruin that pup if you start him to fast.

Just let him be a puppy. Don't hunt the dog at all. It could ruin him. Give him time to mature.

Set a live trap , with something sweet in it for bait , along that creek where the tracks are. Then take the pup with you and check it every day. Let the pup run loose so maybe he can find it before you do , then praise him for it. Do that twice , and then remove the live trap and just walk him up and down the creeks.

I am working with a pup also and waswondering hoe you could ruin a pup. Mine is a mix between dam-walker/mountain cur, sire leopard cur. I have had him out with older dogs and he will go with them for 15-20 min then come back and "hunt" within sight of us. He is also 6 mo. How will taking him out with older dogs ruin him?

Hunting a young dog that has (no idea) about how to tree a coon.Is not a good idea with older dogs. You at least want to have them a little started first and a little older. The average pup just starts at 8-12 months old.You should have them at least treeing on a drag before hunting them at night..That way they have a idea of what you want them to do..If not they will pick up stuff along the way.Like running off game or just picking up bad habits that other dogs have that you hunt them with....Also many older dogs just dont like having pups all over them when hunting..Some pups want to play and a older dog will jump on them or even hurt them a little..That can really mess up a pup..If the pup has some interest in hunting you usually dont have as much problems...Reading the (Walk With Wick) books can really help someone just starting out. Even old coonhunters that think they know it all...LOL...The reason is many guys make the same mistakes over and over again when trying to train their dogs. They dont know what they are doing right or wrong...Most of your really good dogs will become really good dogs.Even though they didnt have a good trainer. But they might have been a lot better. If they had a really good trainer along the way..The dogs kind of train themselves...You will learn more from reading the Wick books than most guys learn in a lifetime of hunting....

Your name says it all redtick! You need to buy my walker. Lol j/k. Honey buns work great or little packs of grape jelly. But whatever you put in the trap just open it half way. Make the coon work for the prize inside the trap... The more he moves in the trap. It makes the odds of knocking the trap greater. Good luck kid.
