Really like the Ruger MarkII in a 270 caliber....shoots flat and the shells are not as expensive as the magnum calibers.

For starters, my vote goes to the .243.... but my dad would have to say get a 7mm rem mag and i can't disagree. I say this because if you can mentally take that recoil, it feels good when you can take an off-hand shot and knock a deer stone cold at 450 yards, with a shoulder blade shot. But to tell u something about shot placement, i shot a buck last year at 325 yards with my .223, and it was all over.... all because i used a neck shot. I would go .243 for the extra punch, and because it's legal in most any state..... I just can't see any reason for the extra recoil, guess i got sick of walking from the shooting bench with a bit tongue, sore shoulder, or whatever else my clumsy self seemed to do!!! :D

I have several here in my gun case, got a savage 243.,a ruger m77 stainless 270.,a marlin 30-30,and a marlin 35.

just depends on where you hunt and what you want to use, when i know i'm going to be hunting thick spots i use either the 30-30 or the 35. both good brush guns, more open areas i like the 243. or 270.

i have a 243, 22-250, 30,06, 7mm rem mag and my 7mm is by far my greatest deer gun. i hate trackin em and it it flattens em right there. gott have good placement tho its not preety on the meat if your lookin to save meat down size a few. i love the meat but all my front shoulders go to jerkey any ways so it doesnt matter much to me

Here in middle and east Tennessee and northern Alabama, most deer are taken at less than 100 yards, most often between 40 and 80 yards due to the habitat and terrain. I have found that a lever action with good buckhorn sights in .357, .44, or 45 long colt is enough gun to take any large game animal in the south and the ammo is cheaper than those fancy high powered bolt actions semi-autos. Although I do have a older Remington 7600 in .308 with gold rolled engraving and fancy checkered wood stocks, It is more gun than any hunting I do and far too pretty for me to take through brush and inclement weather when i have historically had my best luck taking large game.
