I"m a .270 Win. man myself but i will add this that the 30-06 is probably the best all around rifle in the world ! I read a article not to long ago that the two best sellers in order, the 30-06 and then the .270 !

My first deer rifle was a New England Firearms .270. It is still my main deer rifle and has been very accurate and consistent. In fact, i've only had one deer run after being hit, and it ran about 30 yards. I don't know of anyone else personally that hunts with one, but I really like mine cause it hasn't let me down yet.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Thompson Center Pro Hunter! I have the 30-06 model with a black stock and stainless barrel! It looks sweet, but the camo thumbhole stock is even sweeter! They are only single shot but if your like me all you need is one shot! What? Yeah but they are also very accurate and with the recoil system it comes with, it shoots like a .22! Mine has a Leupold 3x9x50 scope, I love it!

I use a Winchester mod. 70 pre 64. Can't say enough about 'em. Savage makes a hell of a gun too. Just a matter of what drop, comb, etc. feels good for you. No one can tell you what's best for you cept yourself, an you learn that by shootin'...alot. Now 308 vs. 30-06 is an endless debate, but they are both great rounds. I grew up using an old sported 30-40, took many deer with it. Never hear about the 30-40 anymore but years ago they were a common gun in hunting circles. 03 Springfield, 8mm Mauser, all old sported bringback guns an they all fed me many a time. Some modern shooters will talk about an old round being too slow, or rainbow arc, but if you learn your gun you can get it done.

I use Remington 788 in .308 with a canjar trigger, bushnell scope, muzzlebreak, aftermarket stock and few other accessories and it is a tack driver.

I shoot a savage 110 7mm mag, with a bushnell 4-16x40. its dead if i can see them. my fiance shoots a 1962 winchester model 100 .243. the 243 is one of the most versitile guns, the can shoot a heavier load and drop deer, and lightened up and become predator slayers. if i had limited money and wanted a good deer rifle and coyote and fox gun, i would get a 243.
