I take my hand and slap it loudly on the side of my light thats strapped to my belt. It usually works, found on first Monday night by doing that.

Wow. There were a lot of coon finding tips. Let me throw my 2 cents in...

1. When walking into the tree always have your light down real low. As Bob said a red lense works great.

2. If the coon doesn't look pretty quick, turning the light out and looking for a ball has been a successful method of finding coons.

3. If a coon just won't look and there is a MOON, you can look every limb over with the moon light. You will have to move around, but the moon will allow you to see the fur of the coon.

4. A squaller works most of the time. If you have tried all of the above and the squaller doesn't work, he's probably not there!

BTW- There aint no way I'm sitting 15-30 minutes for a coon I couldn't find! :?

I try turning my light off for a couple seconds and then shining it back on the coon. Or i have a flicker switch which seems to get their attention for some reason.

Ive got a flicker switch on my light which is nice but I used to cover my light head with my hand and pull it on and off to kinda manually flicker it lol. There's some apps you can download on your phone that will make a few different coon noises but they arent loud enough really. Probably best thing to do is like what maximus said just pull dogs off get them quiet turn lights out and walk away from tree then try to shine it after a few mins when dogs are quiet.

WHEN THE LEAVES ARE STILL ON AND WITH PINES AND CEDARS MY SON STANDS AT THE BASE OF THE TREE (THE TOP SIDE) AND TURN 21 VOLT LED LIGHT AS HIGH AS IT WILL GO AND SHINE STRAIGHT UP THE TREE, I BACK UP THE HILL WHERE I CAN SEE THE TOP GOOD AND LEAVE MY LIGHT OFF AND LOOK FOR THE COON 9 OUT OF 10 TIMES I WILL FIND IT.... 99.9% OF THE TIME THEY WILL BE IN THE UPPER SIDE OF THE TREE, THAT IS HERE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF VA......LAST YEAR IN TREES WITHOUT LEAVES I FOUND 10 EVERY COON WITH THE DOGS I HAVE NOW.... UNLESS A DEN TREE WHICH ODDLY ENOUGH ONLY TREED VERY FEW LAST YEAR IN DENS.... MY DAD USE TO SHOCK AND WHIP DOGS WHEN I WAS GROWING UP SAYING YOU SLICK TREEING S.O.B THEN ON OUR WAY LIVING TREE ONE OF US SEE IT'S EYES WHEN WE SHINE BACK WHERE WE HARDLY WOULD SEE THE TREE.

I was never a believer in squallers till the chatterbox came along. let me tell you if they don't look they will start moving so much you can see the limb shaking! This is a instructional video of how to use it. No more having to flutter your tongue to make it work.
