I was wondering if some experienced trainers could suggest a good coonhound training book or video. I've looked at "Walk with Wick" online and there are two volumes... are both volumes needed for this book to be useful? (I'm looking for a book that will not only help to train a dog for coons, but for lions and bobcats as well.) Thanks!

"Dog Talk" Starting Your Dog can be purchased from www.sportdogsupply.com . Tom not only sells the book , but he will also offer 6 months of free consultation with your purchase of this book, via email, phone or letter. I have trained and in the process of training another hound with this book. I would suggest getting both of his books.
I hope this helps.

ok hound. everyone has an opinion, but have you found a book that you like better? if so, why did you like it better than wicks. its hard to find a book or a video on hound training that is step by step like retriever training books and videos. i wonder why that is.

Visit www.trainingthetreedog.com to read about my step by step coon hound and squirrel dog training book that comes with online step by step videos. It is a scientific approach to training larger numbers of younger dogs with higher quality hunting traites. There you will also find free articles on advanced training techniques for those who have read Training the Tree Dog and the Science of Nutrition and how it can improve the dogs performance.

I'm with Blue bandit on Dog Talk. I have both books and I see Tom once a month. Tom's dogs are the top reproducing redbones. They do not get that way because of luck but hard work and a program that works. He has alot of knowledge from many years and he is a great guy. The program he uses works if you follow it. He lays it out in the books in steps. If you follow them you can't fail.

I have read all of the books on coonhound training that I know of. I read Whitney's Coon hunter hand book, Solborg's Dog talk, Obe Corey's Locating Treedogs, all four of the Miller Brothers books, Vickie Lamb's book, and J. R. (Bobby) Tillman's manuals and I learned something from every one of them. BUT in my opinion John Wick's books are head and shoulders above all the rest. Just my humble opinion and probably not worth very much.

Take these guys advice. I am brand new with my first pup and I got vols 1 and 2 and I am sure I woulda ruined my pup had I not. If ya just gonna get one of em I'd say get vol 1. But better hurry Wick's is closin down soon and ya can get it there for 34 bucks plus shipping. I tried to get one at our booksamillion here and they said it was no longer in print and that they could get me a used copy for around 175 bucks!! Sure glad Wicks didn't get gone before I got mine..... :)

If I was you I would buy the "Walk with Wick" book. Both volumes are very good and will teach your pup alot at an early age making him turn out to be a great coon dog. John Wick knows what he is talking about!

I have a copy of "Training the Tree Dog". Looks like good info for people starting a pup without the aid other dogs. It starts out with the science of learning etc. The book emphasized early training during the first 16 weeks of age. Randy basically uses progressivly more challanging games of "Hide and Seek" to start the pup. He give detailed instructions for 5 stages of training with the final one being the transition from playing games to treeing game.

It is definately a change of pace from the old "leave them alone until they are a year old, turn em out with a trained dog -- shoot em if they don't pan out method".
