Don't use peroxide, it would be too harsh. If you want to try to make your own, there is a good recipe for home made ear cleaner that alot of folks (including me) use.

16 Oz 70% rubbing alcohol (do NOT use the 91%)
two tablespoons Boric Acid
16 drops gentian violet (ask your local pharmacy for this)
and for good measure a couple of tablespoons of white vinegar.

Shake it really well as the boric acid will settle and make sure you don't let it get on any fine fabrics as it will stain. But, I have been using it for two years and my hound has yet to have another yeast infection, which he was prone to get before I started using this over store bought remedies.

Bubbasbbq's recipe sounds like a good one. We use vinegar/alcohol mix.

I use wet Q tips, and a wet paper towl with warm water on the bloodhounds. Thier ears get nasty because they are so long and drag in everything.

I also put powder in the ears after cleaning, every other day. Dont rember the name of the powder. My wife picks it up for me.

You should never put a Q-Tip in a dogs ear, too easy to injur the ear. We use make-up pads, saturate with solution and rub around inside the ear.

Hey Harehunter, we use them, too. I stole some off the wife one day when I was desperate for something to use and they worked great. Soft and absorbant with just enough "tooth" to help clean.

The only reason some people say that is for the same reason some people say its really not good for us either. Some people swear by them and some people say it only pushes the wax and dirt further. Plus you could potentially damage the inside of the ear blah blah blah...

The rule with Q-tips is "never probe deeper than you can see". If your dog has ear canals like the grand canyon then by all means, scoop out the crud with a Q-tip. If it is like trying to thread a needle then pour or squirt your cleaning solution in the ear, fold the ear down quickly and smoosh it around real good then let the dog shake its head and crud WILL come out. Then wipe it clean with the makeup pads.

The problem also with using them, any sudden movements by your dog,
and the tip could go down the ear canal.
Keep the cleaning device a soft material. I like the cosmetic pad idea. We work with cotton balls and be liberal with your solution, once a week.
We use OtiCalm.

I dont have a problem with small ear canals, you could drive my truck thur Maggies ears and never touch anything. Not even a brain......

Really she has very large ear canals, it make it easy to clean her ears.

A folded tissue works well too. I squirt the solution right in the dog's ear though and squish it around. Then wipe it dry with the tissue.
