Hello, all. I'm new to the Forum, but given my current project, this seems like the best place to start.
My Great Uncle Otie Calhoun took over breeding of the Calhoun variant of the American Foxhound from my great grandfather Scott, who assumed the reigns of the operation from my great-great grandfather Barnabus. Otie even wrote a book in about 1963 about the foundations of the breed, titled, History of a Boy and a Great Breed of Hounds. None of Otie's kin have taken up the breeding since his death, so the Calhoun Hound is now only found in a few pockets of Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia to the best of my knowledge.
This is where I come in. I grew up hearing about what great hounds these are, and I refuse to let generations of my family's hard work disappear into the foggy past. I am committed to keeping this amazing line of dogs alive. Any help from people who currently hunt with Calhouns, know of a Calhoun pack, or just have some good stories of Calhouns would be most appreciated.
I know there some serious rivalries in the hunting community, but I am not concerned with whether a Walker is better than a July, or a Trigg is better than a Calhoun. There's room for all of these fine animals in the US hunting packs. I look forward to hearing from any and all with knowledge of the Calhoun Hound. Thanks!
