I have a male here with the crooked tail. He is heavy line bred off from the Original Northern Blue Hammer. He is the dog of a life time type of dog. He is fast on track and quik to get treed, but does it right. He is the most accurate dog I have ever hunted. He is a up on the wood, huge bawl mouthed tree dog. When line breeding we ended up with two crooked tail pups. The litter is to young to tell what they will turn out like.

I've always heard it referred too as a hammer tail. My buddy has a male with it and he's a 4 legged trackin machine. All natural ya know? Kind where he don't have too work too hard too train him. He threw some pups with the hammer tail and people were pickin them out strictly cause that. Thought they'd be all naturals. Also Utchman bred

I have a blue merle leopard with a noticeable crooked tail.
Does That mean he might be out of Hammer III???
Or does that mean that Hammer was out of Leopards ?? Way back?
Who knows?
Other option is (neither).

Seen several utchman/ smokey river hounds with crooked tails, ears that weren't parallel to each, like they was one grew alittle higher from the other on top of their head, had seizures, tumors on milk glands and joints... I figured it was just because of all the line breeding.
A genetic defect. Never seen one better then another.. they was all average.

The Blue River Droop Jr dog owned by Steve Burkholder and Jerry McAvoy back in the late 90's had a crook in his tail. In fact, his kennel name was originally 'Crook.'

I loved it.
