Why not use rubber laminated leg holds? A non target cat can easily be released using your catch pole. I've even released em by putting a recycle box over them and with the foot with the trap in it outside the box just open the trap and release. Getting a wise old cat to commit to a cage trap can be very tricky sometimes.

I know a man in Oklahoma who has some live traps with two sections. The first part is the normal cage trap, and the second is a smaller cage connected to the back of the trap where he puts a young live rooster. The noise brings the cat from a long ways apparently. He has caught quite a few that way.
