The closer to the middle of the day you do it the better. Avoid letting the skunk out just before dark, that's when they start to wake up. I've released a lot of them and they never bothered to wake up until I had tilted the cage and rolled them out and walked away.
i can't catch a coon either when i need one... haven't caught any skunks either though... sure can catch alot of nothing and possums though... pups are pretty good about finding skunks though...

walk real slow and open the door after about 2 days in the trap is what i have done before
that towel over the trap seems like it would be a cool trick too
the towel helps.
It also helps if you sing or hum something soothing while you approach. You don't want the skunk getting excited or surprised. I have carried a caged skunk quite a distance many times without problems. Keep an eye on the animal at all times, and if it starts to turn its rump toward you, put the cage down gently and get out of Dodge!
HEE HEE Everyone know's he can't spray ya in the trap HEE HEE. Sneak up on the trap and suddenly pick it up and shake it real hard. It will confuse the skunk and he won't be able to sray youat all. HEE HEE. TRUST ME. LOL
