has anybody ever made a coon skin cap if so how did you do it i would like to make one with the first coon we kill with the dogs i would figure it needs to be tanned but i dont know how to do that neither |

I havent made a hat but i have tryed tanning and its hard to tan a coon hide your self do to all the fat even if you fleshed it out real good so my advise would be to have it tanned by someone and then make your hat. Also some fur companys will tan your hide and make the hat for you if desired. |

making the hat is easy. You just fold the legs in. and sew. fold the head down then sew. |

I would imagine that if you put in a little bit of Thinsulate it would be quite warm to wear. Fur is always naturally very warm. That's why Russians living in Siberia wear fur on their hands, head and feet almost exclusively. |

Nite Lite catalog (huntsmart.com) carries a product called Tannit that you can use to tan hides.You have to skin the animal(of course) and flesh the hide.Stretch the hide out on a piece of plywood and tack it down.Salt the entire skin and leave it in a place where air(but NOT moisture) can get to it for about 3 weeks.Follow the instructions on the Tannit bottle.I brushed it on with a paint brush,and grabbed the skin in both hands and worked it in.I let that dry for 2 days and brushed more on.It took 2 skins to make a hat to fit me(but my head is probably bigger than most).After you get the hat sewn into shape, turn it inside out and sew in a liner if so desired.I used flannel and stuffed it with Poly-Fil (pillow stuffing). A few tips- make sure you get ALL the fat off the skin, or it will ruin, and don't be surprised if you have to cut the pieces apart and use more than one hide sewn together to get the desired hat.And DON'T get in a hurry. |

Yes, it does get stiff, that's why you have to untack it after it dries out and wash the salt off of it.I used a wet rag and wiped it all off.The Tannit is a liquid that turns it from a dried skin to a tanned skin.You have to work the stuff in real good.I even let it dry and re-applied it.Tannit is available from Nite Lite (huntsmart.com).I bought the deer-sized bottle- I think it was $39.99,but it's enough to do 6 or 8 coons,maybe more. |

you put the salt on it for about 3 days while its tacked up then you take it down and rub the tannit in about twice and how long will it keep. |

after you put the tannit on the hideswhen it is stiff will it start to loosen up and be real soft |
