I've hunted hounds for 20 years, but I've never trapped before. I have a new pup I'm training and thought I'd catch some coon to let the dog run. I started with a cage trap and caught a few near my sweet corn and food plots. I then bought a dozen Duke DP's. the You Tube videos made it look easy. I've had them set for a week now and all I've caught was a chipmunk. I'm using marshmallows in some and "truck load" coon bait from trappers supply in the others. Go ahead and laugh at me because I'm laughing at myself too....in fact when I saw that chipmunks back end sticking out of the trap this morning, I thought, what the heck am I doing!!!!!! I know there are coon in the area, I still see tracks in the mud. Any advice?

well you seem to have alot of traps so try alot of diffrent bait If the coons are in a sweet corn patch try some sweet scents. If its warm try penut butter for a change up. keep trying With the dog proofs i havnt had as much luck at times as i do with other traps. Try a live bait trap.

My dogs been doing pretty good. We seem to have lots of acorns this year. The coons probably just stay near the acorns. What kind of bait would you recommend to get them when they are feeding on acorns?

I caught two coon so far. One on dog food soaked in maple syrup, the other on some tuna fish. I caught another chipmunk too, the darn thing was caught in one baited with tuna.....I thought those little critters only ate nuts and such.

I use a number of different things! An old fashion out the store great snack for me when my belly is hollering at me, the cheapest doesn't matter the brand. I many whatever is cheaper, but a honey bun! (this is my favorite!) I also use plain old dog food the cheapest i can find doesn't matter the brand on this either. I use cat food as well if its cheaper same concept as dog food. I use sardines or tuna same difference also between these two. My grandfather caught many believe it or not using this. He used to kill an old bird out a tree in his yard. Whatever he saw Robin, blue jay, canary, it didnt matter. (Dont judge my grandfather because HE didn't eat the bird him self) I remember him having tons of luck doing that. I dont do it because i dont got the heart to kill a helpless old bird. He also used the old coin or shiny object trick with his old traps. They weren't dp's though. Just thought i would add my 2 cents worth lol. My favorite is the honey bun like i said. I've had luck with all just prefer the honey bun for some reason. To me it catches them faster. Im going to try the marshmallows though never thought or heard of that thanks for telling me that!
