so i trapped a coon this week and skinned the hid to train my new pup on it. she is doin great. last night i went to train her with it and it started to rot. got lookin at the hide and it had magots in it. what can i do to preserve the hid to make it last longer so that this will not happen again?

you could put it in the fridge or freezer or maybe try salting it or just cut the tail of and use it that should'nt rot as fast also I'd look to get a new hide every 3 - 4 days to keep that freash coon smell going

U can stretch it out and cover the raw side completely with salt and let it sit for 24 hrs then shake the salt off and reapply a fresh layer of salt for another day and it will be good for quite a while.

I've always rolled it up and stuck it in a bag and put it in the freezer that way it keeps it's sent

I usually get a new hide every three weeks or so it doesn't start to have a rotting smell.

check in to keeping a live coon. we went through our game worden to get ours. we bought a real fluffy pillow cases and put them in with our coon and pull them out when ever we are working a pup, sent is always fresh. as far as hide freezz it flat in large bag use worm water on it when you work pup. should last a month or more. just make sure it dont though all the way out.
