Indeed my friend they do get wise I would suggest if you are using a loose bait such as corn or any fruit line the back of the trap with stiff cardboard....OR use canned tuna or sardines I don't care what they do they can't pull that through the bars!!

I take peanut butter or jelly or syrup whatever sweet and sticky and put on the trigger plate or in a can wired to the cage that will get'em canned cat food or tuna will work too but you will have to deal with stray cats and grinners. Good Luck

Actually i use sardines and this coon is smart enough to pull the can to the bars and somehow get the food out. Thanks for the ideas I will give them a try.

I used canned bait as well trick i learned is just poke holes in the lid don't open it the smell still attracts them they just have a hard time getting the can open if they are lucky enough to do that much!!

What would I use to hold the smaller wire to the trap? I thought of using zip ties but i would think the coon might gnaw through them.

Ive always taken smaller Blugills and redbreast Froze em up in sandwich bags and when i get out there ill spread some peanut butter on it and toss it in the back. They cant pull the whole fish through the bars and its Good sweet fishy stuff. But dont clean the fish Its all about having the head and guts, they wont even bother lookin at it without em!

you can just use almost any kind of wire but copperwire would work the best because its easier to feed through and easier to twist

If a coon is steeling your bait,,, like they do a lot i dig a hole under my pan of my live trap and place the bait there the only way he can get to it is threw the front,,, and i put brush or what ever is handy around the side so he wont reach in from the side,,guide him in threw the front with stick,s good luck

i usually use a small metal can and put peanut butter and vanilla flavoring in it and tie it to the back of the cage that way i can use the same bait cup over and over good luck

I started using zip ties, but they'll still reach in and trip the trap. Get some hardware cloth, cut it to fit that area on both sides of the trap, wire it in place, I haven't had the problem since I did this. Look at the cage in this video, you can see the tighter screen in the middle of the trap.
