i rip 2 x 4s so my 2 x 2s are 1 3/4. i use a floor rail as a spacer,so the gap is actually 1 3/4. i have had beagles in them for years and have had no problems. i think the space would be just fine for a jack russell too.

Toe,
I built one of your houses and it works great. I am having a problem with my pup pissing and crapping in his house though. I figured that he can get away with it now b/c he is only 15 weeks old and he can still be in the house and not laying in his mess. But untill he gets big enough to have to lay in it (which should cure the problem) anyone know anything to get him to stop this NOW!!!!

Would it be better to use pressure treated wood for the floor or would it be better to use white pine and then spray it with thompsons water seal?

HuntEnglish wrote: Would it be better to use pressure treated wood for the floor or would it be better to use white pine and then spray it with thompsons water seal? just use the white pine and leave it natural. since the floor gets the most use,it is what you will have to replace a few years down the road. the water seal will not make it last longer.its where you screw or nail the ends of the floor rails is where they fail. after a few years they will become loose. the water sealant also makes the stool stick to the rails more, insted of falling through.i used treated wood on the floors when i first started building them 30 yrs ago. i found they did not help it last any longer then untreated.i wish i had some pics of the first ones i built, over the years i made modifications to each new model. these pictured are the final product of years of improving the design..when i found something did not work out right ,i improved on how i built the next ones.these are how i have built them for the last 15 to 20 years.if you get good enough at building them you can make a decent buck selling them.
