It's really going to depend on your budget. You can go with pea gravel, large ceder chips, play sand, number 12 stone, river rock, penn. flagstone and the list goes on and on.

You could even build an off the ground floor if you so desire.

All that stuff is easy to clean.Pick up solids, remove the dog,put down lime, spray with hose real good and put dog back in!

Just leave it dirt bottomed, concrete will give older dogs arthritis but if you have a bed or house for them to lay in I guess its okay.

You could build a wooden lift.
About 3 or 4 2x4's running one way, and planks going the other way on top, nail the planks to the 2x4's and it holds up good.
Thats what we have on the side of our shed with 3 kennels on each side. I clean it daily, really simple and easy to clean.

has anyone tried the thick rubber mats that they use in horse stalls and put something over them that is easy to scoop up manure etc to of them or just leave them be since they dont rot or mildew that I have seen

I have also wondered about the rubber mats. They seem like they would be easy enough my only concern would be if they pens are in the sun then those mats may get pretty hot...especially here in Alabama!

i tried the rubber mats and the dogs seemed like it hurt there feet to walk across it in the summer so i took them out and they got back to acting fine.

and that green stuff is some astro turf type stuff, some1 had dumped 6 roles, i got to, being the oppertunist that i am lol, and figured i could use them 4 somethin, put it on the dirt spots so i'm not walkin through mudd, in the dog houses because its weaved, stays pretty dry, and dogs love it. now cleanin the poop off it isnt the easiest, its still better then a muddy pen, all i do is get wat i can with the pooper scooper, and then the rest was wit the hose.

I use never used mining belt. I got mine from a sportsmens club that had about a 500ft roll for backing there targets up. It is the simplest and easiest thing I have ever seen. All you do is spray it off with a hose once a month and it good to go. I have mine on a very slight incline so the urine runs right off. Just make sure it is never been used mining belt because if it has been used then there is all kinds of cracks and so on it it to hold urine and feces. You can also get a hold of a miner and he can probably get you some.
