It can be very bad for your dog to have its feet wet all the time. It softens their pads and can cause them to crack (like having chapped lips). Wet/muddy conditions are also a good way for infection to set in. It is harder to keep the urine & poo cleaned up - it spreads all over and the dog winds up walking in a nasty mush that is worse than just mud. Check around your area to see what each type of flooring will be cheapest for what you want to do. Wood chips must be regularly changed. Many people swear by gravel and concrete.

we were going to use an old deck off the front of my house but i ended up buying pea stone 4 yds . cost $ 80.00 delivered. i put 3x5 landscape timbers around the outside of the kennels to keep the stone in. it works great.

I have gravel in my kennels but it is hard to clean and the dogs dig it into the dirt. Concrete is probibly the best thing but it wil likely be a little more expensive. We tried wood chips but didn't like them at all, the pups ate them and they got wet really fast. I hope to go concrete before long, I think it will be WELLL worth it!!!

Here in Oregon it RAINS Alot, my kennels have horse stall mats with shavings on top, we also cover the top and 2 sides with tarps to reduce the actual rain into the kennel but they still have enough air flow. If you have any Boarding Stables in your area and they are adding or changing the mats in the stalls you can sometimes get them for free or really cheap they wont be perfect but they get the job done, makes it easy to clean out the kennels too.

I need some insight on what to put down on the floor of my kennel. it sits over the hill from my house and everytime it rains it turns to mud and my hounds get nasty and the water pools in them. im thinking about gravel but im afraid the water would just wash the gravel away. may just get a bunch of pallets and put them down so the water and mud would flow through. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I put thin layer of gravel down wet and tamped it, then bought 80lbs bags of quickcrete. sprinkled quickrete(strait out of bag) over the gravel and wet quickrete good and used push broom the grade it out. left it rough with some rocks stickin up, good for toughen feet on running hounds. I used about 5 or 6 bags per 10x8 pen. if they find a weak spot and dig it i just fill back in with quickrete. cheapest most sanitary way ive seen. hope this helps.
