What we use is plain and simple... whatever the feed store isn't out of! We rarely use any bedding in the summer because the dogs normally dig holes and lay in them anyway. During the winter months, we'll use cedar shavings or hay or sometimes pine shavings (if that's all the feed store has at the time). It's not a flea and tick thing with ours because we use it to keep them warmer. Our vet got a new kind of pill that kills fleas within 10 minutes and keeps them off for a month, so we've been trying them. So far they work pretty well.
I use FrontLine, and have cedar in the houses, my biggest thing with Flea's are the ground sqrl's. They bring'em in every summer, and thats the only time I have to use FrontLine, dont have a problem the rest of the year.

Been told to use hay in the winter and cedar chips summer. Cedar can reduce unwanted pest such as ticks and fleas. Many guys use cedar. Should be fine.
I DONT LIKE CEDAR CHIPS EITHER. IVE HAD THEM KILL PUPS CAUSE IT STICKS TO THEIR NOSE AND GETS IN THEIR MOUTH. I USE PINE CHIPS CAUSE THEY ARE A BIGGER FLAKE. BUT AS FAR AS THE FLEAS GO I PUT SALT DOWN IN MY KENNELS AND HOUSES. SALT WILL KILL THE LARVAE BREAKING THE LIFE CYCLE.
i am new at the coon hound game, only got 37 yrs at it. so dont give my opinon a second thought. maybe when i am as knowledged as you guys i'll switch to the cedar too........... yea right.
i used cedar chips for yrs with no problems.then i read in a article in a field and steam mag about it and it said they were toxic to dogs.so i stopped.
i used to give my dog a chocolate cup cake before a nite hunt and i never had a problem with it,then my vet told me that chocolate was toxic to dogs. so i stopped.
i never had a problem with cedar chips or chocolate. but like the vet said, its not you that will have a problem. its the dog that will. unless he can tell you it makes him feel differant "you" wont ever have a problem with it.
it aint my place to tell anyone not to use chocolate or cedar chips. aint my dogs, aint my concern. just said i wont use it with my dogs with any chance of it being toxic whether i can see it in the dog or not..
