Here in wi I used to try everything, but now I just soak the food in warm water till it won't soak up anymore & then feed it. It is the only water they get all winter. Been doing it for 5 yrs now. Sounds like same thing that the guy from new york does.

It never freezes over all winter. I made them about 15 years ago and they still work. The bulbs burn out about every other year.
thats what i use too. they look like a speaker box and the dish sits in the hole where the speaker would go. got 6 hooked up. 40 watt bulbs keep them with fresh water, i go to 60 watts when it gets super cold outside. i've used them for years. ....................TC

Im in ontario Canada so it is below freezing for at least 4 or 5 months a year. dogs get fresh water every night with there feed and when that freezes there is lots of snow on the ground for them to get a little water

I also use something like this, but I just put the heated dish in the box and run the cord out the back. Works great, never have to break ice. I made these after a buddy lost a good bird dog to chewing on a cord. Now I don't worry, they can't get to the cord.

i keep my dogs in off the ground pens. i run the cords out the side and deck screw the boxes down. the cord is outside the pen and the dogs can't get to it. i have g f i outlets too, they will trip the breaker at the slightest short.. i tried the heated dishes and my dogs kept rippin the heat prongs out of them.my hounds drink more water in the winter then any other time...................TC

I built one like Toe Cutters and they do work well. I use a 75 watt bulb and it will keep it unfrozen till about 10 degrees or so.

i built the ones in the pics above. you can find scrap plywood and the light fixtures are only a couple bucks. cord off a old coffee maker or micro wave ,anything with a plug. an old speaker box works too. just run your cord to the light fixture and put the bucket in where the speaker use to be.

Heated buckets are the way to go. My dogs drink more water in cold weather than hot
