What is the best way to fix my dog house for heating? I have fixed a 55 plastic drum for a house. I figured I could put a light up in there someway, but what would be the best way of doing that? Should I build a box frame with siding (plyboard) and stuff insulation in there? What kind of insulation would be good, a moving quilt, pink panther, that foam sheet insulation? opinions and pictures please.

Thanks

All of mine are framed with 2x4 and wraped with 3/4 ply board. In the winter we put a rubber flap over the doors to hold in their body heat. Remember, a small box is a warm box !!! Not too small though.

Look on page 2, theres a post called Dog House for a hound. It may answer some of your questions.

The important thing is to shelter your house from the wind and to have plenty of fresh clean hay.

If you are in ALabama, I doubt very seriously that it will get cold enough that your dog would need anything other than the barrel full of straw or shavings.

Over the years I have leard that straw and hay seems to make the fleas and mites worse. It may be a geological thing, but in my area that is how it seems to go. I only use cedar shaveings. Plus the shaveings smell good too.

Reloader...That is one nice pup you have. If you live where the weather is mild you should try pine needles. I use them in the summer.

it probably is, Skidmark because we can use hay here in the Northeast with no problems. Cedar is good, too, (love the smell, too) but we can't always get it.

i probably don't have to do anything because i live in central coast nc. a plastic barrell with good hay should be ok. still, i'm going to wrap the barrell with the blue fan/folded foam that's used to go between old siding and new siding. it's only about 3/8 of an inch thick. over the foam, i'm going to put bands of white aluminum trim. the aluminum is thin and is bent to cover wood trim to match new siding. i will seal the joints between the bands of aluminum with a good grade of white silicon caulk. i'll attach the ends of the bands with stainless steel pop rivets. this will also keep it from getting so hot in the summer.
