Thinking about using old washing machines to make a lightweight metal dog box. Any ideas? Was thinking about laying 2 of the shells down and welding them together then cutting to size and adding doors and windows.

I think u have a good idea here. I would frame in each compartment with 1x2s and put Styrofoam in between them. Then attach some thin Luan to the inside of the sides and top. I would then take your measurements of the bottom, top, sides, and back and cut out the metal from the dryers. I'd then weld all them pieces together and afterward slide in ur wood framing. Then figure out what you're going to do with the front and the doors. Regardless of how u make it, if it works out post pics. Good luck!

p.s. if u use this idea not only will the Styrofoam add insulation, but once it's sandwiched in between the Luan and sheet metal will also add strength with lil to no weight. So u don't need to go crazy with the 1x's. Also I wouldn't think of using the 1x2s like u would 2x4s in traditional framing but instead putting the 2" side against the Luan and metal. U may need to add an additional "stud" to the front outside corners to give you more material to work with once u go to sheet the front. Again good luck!
