I bought a Savage model 24, 222 over 20 gauge and wondered if anyone had any reload info on the 222 for raccoons. Or is it just to darn big of a caliber?

id say a bit overkill for treed coons. nice rifle though. i have a .22mag over 20 gauge. never used it coon hunting but will try it sometime.
.22lr or mag is all you need for coon hunting.

I have seen some really nice 22mag over 20g but nothing that I want to pound through the woods. This one I picked up pretty cheap and was hoping I could make it work. Thanks for the reply.

I had been looking for about a year and found a few that were in the three to four hundred range. I carry a youth model 22lr now and it works great if the coon cooperates and will show me an eye. If they won't I'm launching a few rounds up trying to get them to move to catch an eye. I don't like doing that! My nieghbor just happened to have and wanted to sell this one. I paid $175 for it. It has a fox on one side and a pheasant on the other. I put auto clear coat on the stocks to help with the abuse it will get if I can find a load.

Maybe he wants to trade! LOL I'm going to try it, I have about 800 223 cal military brass that I'm going to neck down and then I dont have to look for my empty brass after each shot. The lowest load I have found is 2100 fps (almost twice as fast as the 22Lr) and give it a try. Thanks again for your response

I have loaded them way down using Blue dot powder and light bullets. The lightest load I have used is 7 grains of BD and a 35 grain vmax. You can barely hear the shot and it kills good.
I would personally use a 22 lr, or a 22 mag with FMJ or soft point bullets. Those Savage OU are bigger and heavier than I would want to hunt with. I like the youth rifles in 22 rimfire.
