I second that on the sub sonics I use a 10/22 with rem. subsonics, for coon and some times use the same for squirrel, but most of the time for tree rats I use a 22 mag it gives me a little more range and I can pop a yote and not have to worry much about finding it. Long as you hit the squirrel in the head it dosent mess the meat up. I have never used a 17 for coon but I have taken a squirrel with one and it was a mess. Heres a pice of some northern ky tree rats taken with the 22 mag I guess in a pinch I would use it on coon.

I really like my 22mag. Stick with a soft point, or something that will hold together. Have some hollow point that open them up too much. I have used the 17 and it is extemely accurate but just a bit too "explosive" for my taste. When you get a really big northern coon, that is only offer you a shot at his backside its nice to have that extra penetration that you can get with a 22mag to get a clean kill.
