i was wondering which caliber of rifle would be better a .204 or the 30-06? my quarry will be strictly coyote. i know i need one of these calibers as my .303 i believe would make a rather large mess and my 17 hmr and .22 lr i feel wouldnt have enough impact energy at say 150 or 200 yards to cleanly take a moderate or large coyote. im leaning more towards the 30-06 as theres a nice savage 30-06 with a nice scope on it at my local gun shop and the price didnt seem to dear. i know theres quite a difference between these to calibers but ive been told and read on the net that the .204 rivals the .22-250 and .223 but with less of a dispatch noise. so im drawn between the two calibers. ill be hunting farmland with wide open spaces that back onto hardwood and conniferous forests. ive seen on videos and heard that the 30-06 is perfect for youth. but im just to confused to know which caliber to pick. so if any one has a suggestion or advice id like to here it.
also as a farther note there are no restrictions on caliber for coyote in my hunting area

I don't concider a 30-06 a predator rifle! I am not sure that you can still buy the accelerator round for it either. Why take the extra recoil to do a job that a 22-250 can do easily? The .204 is "something new" but adds nothing new in ballistics. If you are concerned at all about cost of ammunition then the 223 is for you. If you want a solid top performing round the 22-250 is already there. To me the 219 zipper and the 204 are to much wild cat rounds even though ballistics are so similar to the 22-250. 22-250 is just a lot more available!

I will probably catch a rash for this but one of my favorite rifles for yotes has always been my old 22 hornet. It does tend to lack when it comes to range, but I like to call them in as I close as I can. I have not had the chance to shoot a 204, but I would say 30-06 is a bit much for yotes.

I would just get a .22-250, or a .223 and be done with it. Both good calibers and you won't have to take out a loan to buy ammo, which will also be more convienient to find.

I have both calibers. The 204 is a great varmint/predator gun. Very fast and flat shooting. The 30-06 will shoot a long ways also. But I would recommend it for deer and other big game animals

i personally shoot coyote with a bolt action 243.coyotey are a huge problem here in the mountains of east tennessee.im already on number 27 and have been hunting about a dozen times.the 243 has plenty of power fairly cheap to shoot, fairly quick loading for a bolt action.hope i helped

my opinion would be a 7mm balistic tip and from your list i would get the 204.the 30-06 is more of a deer huntin rifle id say its 2 powerful for coyote

living where you do I would go with the 30-06 that way you could also take large game without investing in a new gun if concerned with recoil get the low recoil ammo if you shoot the lighter bullets in a soft point it should be a pass through shot with little pelt damage 30-06 ammo is sold everywhere 204 is not I live in Iowa and have 223, 204and 30-06 for strictly varmint hunting I like 223 cheaper to shoot and easier to find 204 really no better than most 22 caliber centerfires what they gain in speed they lose in bullet weight meaning less down range energy the 30-06 bullet will drop faster but flat embarass most varmint guns with down range energy with more predictable accuracy at extreme ranges a guy in western Iowa uses a 308 and consistantly shoots coyotes at 600+ yds the 308 is another good one shorter action than 30-06 similar ballistics if not a little better

the accelerators work, got 2 try em 4 the 1st time this weekend and dropped me a female. it was only bout 100 yards, but the shoot fast and hardly any recoil, and arent very loud, didnt even ring my ears. didint put a but a 22 sized hole in the hide. if ur gonna use 30-06, i would recommend these bullets. 4000 fps.

ever thought of the 25.06 you can load it down to 55 grain for yot or up for deer it is faster and flatter then the .223 or the 22-250 and has a range of 600 yards and at 200-300 it is a nail driver

204 No question asked, I own all the above mentioned rifles my 2nd choice for yotes would be a 22 Hornet,223 or 22.250 223 is cheapest to shoot if you get cheap ammo 204 is not that bad to shot

I hunt coyotes alot, I used to use a .17hmr, it is accurate and I love shot placements, I recently bought a savage .204 predator, it is awesome I have had one animal run it was a deer, I did find him about 60 yds away, I have dropped 2 deer, 2 wild hogs, 4 coyotes, and a ram with it I highly recommend a .204
