i have a springfield 12 gauge, auto action. is there such thing as over cleaning a gun. seems if i dont clean it everytime after i use it, it wont pull the shells out, like all the build up of crap is makin the cartridge stick on the inside and wont eject. it def. get dirty after every time of use.

will those little wire bruch attachments for your cleaner rod have a bad long term effect on the gun by wearing things down over time. i love this shot gun, and this is its only flaw. thanks

Do you strip it? I mean take the bolt out and clean inside the receiver.
you may have a bad buildup of crud and you are removing the exposed bits, leaving the hidden junk behind. Clean the extractor with an old toothbrush.
The spring that holds the extractor shut could be dirty and not let the claw close right around the rim. You could also have a worn extractor and the extra resistance is making the claw slip. That is possible, but it may just need a good stripping.

as for brushing the bore. It depends on the brush. I use nylon or tynex brushes mostly. They never scratch and don't break like brass. Brass is OK bu avoid steel brushes at all cost. They can do bad things.

hope that helps.

ya thanks for the help. i dont usually take out the bolt but every once and while to clean. the brush i have is brass. i had that claw replaced when i got the gun, two years ago, cause it nevere would grab to eject the shell. now its just every once and awhile that this happens. it is a fairly old gun as well. it was my grandpas shotgun

I wonder if they put a new spring in it? If so, they might need to file the extractor claw SLIGHTY more positive, maybe .002" so it catches better. Either that or there is crud in the spring hole that is holding the extractor open. Could be alot of things.

try this: When you take the bolt out, take an empty and slide it onto the bolt face under the extracter. It should hold it. Now put it slightly. It should resist slightly before releasing. tr flexing the extractor open and closed and se how it behaves. Those were nice guns. Good luck with it
