I would check out the new pointed ammunition and go with heaviest solid available keep shots under 100 yds. go for broadside heart or lung shot the head is a small target

ive got 150 grain hollow points and 150 grain power points.(soft tip?)
im only gonna use one type so what will have a better take down affect on bear and the ever elusive whitetail

definately not the hollowpoints I would use Hornady's LEVERevolution with the 160gr bullet if it was me the better performance and range is worth buying new ammo I sold my 30-30 right before these came out wish I had it back now put a good 4x scope on it and have a great all around setup from 50yds. to 200yds.

Are you in western ny where they just opened up the season? Do not head shoot a bear because they score them by the measurements of their head and if you shoot them there its not going to work to score them.
