i know people who have tried it.. the problem is that the faster a bullet travels usually the bigger the hole in the creature, and a .17 caliber bullet travels really fast and does make a big hole, different bullets in the caliber may help a little but overall a .22 caliber works best. usually with the .17 depending on where you hit the coon, the bullet will travel right through since its so small in diameter and travels so fast. and usually a .22 caliber bullet gets lodged somewhere in the coon. .17 caliber bullets do to much damage to the pelt for me. like i said i havent seen a coon shot with every bullet for the .17 but with a couple different kinds i have and there isnt much of a difference. so that is why i stick with the .22. It is the perfect caliber for coon as far as i am concerned. but if you have a .17 and dont want to buy a .22 and dont care about pelt damage, than use what you have. thats just my opinion on using the .17 for coon though. good luck, cody

I have shot a couple coon out with my 17 HMR. I much prefer a .22 long rifle hollow point. A 17 will certainly do the job but at close range bringing a coon out of a tree, its not necessary.

Psst,I think thats why there is a Firearm Discussion on here for this very reason.
But a .22 is ideal.

If you have to shoot a coon with A .17, Winchester makes a hollow point bullet that doesn't do AS MUCH damage as a ballistic tip. I thought my .17 HMR would be perfect for coon when I first got it, bit I shot one out with a V-max bullet, and it looked like I hit him with an axe. If you have a coon 250 yards up a tree, go for it, but I recommend a .22 otherwise.

I usually use a .22 pistol but have shot some with a .17hmr I didn't have any pelt damage using CCI TNT rounds shoot them in the head and there shouldn't be a problem it is a little overkill but very efficient if thats all you have I would not think twice about using it since buying both .17 mach2 and hmr my .22 rifles collect dust

Like curhunter after buying the HM2 and HMR my .22 is left for paper punching.

I carry a Taurus HMR revolver.A head shot is a nice and quick kill.It also lessens the chance of doctoring a dog after a brawl.Don't get me wrong I like to see a good match but I like my dogs alot more.

I really like the fact that you don't have to be right up on the tree.Sometimes you may be away from the tree for a better look and the only time you see the coon is no where near the most effective range of the .22.Plus you don't have to make more than one shot.I see folks shooting 3 or 4 times into the coon.Where is the worry about pelt damage there LOL!!!

The HM@ is a really good "in-between".

You could but a properly placed .22 is more efficient and is a lot cheaper.

I just bought a little marlin rifle not to long ago. I was going to get a .17 but between the damage and the avalability of shells i decided not to. I got a 22. lr instead ican get 550 rds for 20 buck in 22. in 17. it cost about 9 bucks for fifty.
