My Remington Model 597 (.22 LR) is "acting up" with its feed and extraction mechanism (it's a semi-automatic). I did a product review on the gun, and it seems others have had the same issue.
It's fairly new... I only bought it about a year and a half ago. I noticed my rounds weren't feeding right last hunting season. But today I went out and shot it, and it's really getting on my nerves!! The load and extraction is just horrible.
I'm just curious as to if anyone on here has a model 597, and if you are having the same issues with your gun? Also, what are you doing about it, or does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do?

My father-in-law has a Mod 597 in a .17HMR and it's the same way, I dont like the way they feed and the way they extract spent shells, it's Rem version of 10/22 and I think it's a ##*%* poor version, I would bring it back to were you baught it and trade it in and get a Ruger 10/22. I like the 10/22 because there are so many things you can add to'em, bigger mag's, light rail's all sorts of stuff. And you can convert it to a .17 HMR with a barrel switch.

The rem 597,s have always had a lot of probs. with feeding & extraction, the hmr,s are downright dangerous i had one this week come in for a broken extractor, I replaced the extractor test fired it and on the third shot it fired before the bolt was closed and blew the clip right apart. and thats the third one ive worked on that did the same thing. Just get a 10-22 or a marlin with the micro-groove barrel and you ll be golden.

my friend baught one and with in a month of purchasing the rifle it done the same thing. He baught it at Wal-Mart and they sent it to Remington. He got it back and right away it done the exzact thing again. So I think its a problem for Remington and they need to fix it or quit producing this rifle.

Go figure... but what everyone said is exactly what I expected you all to say. No doubt, I have heard by far wonderful things about Ruger's 10/22... eventually when the time is right I'll most likely be spending my time and money on the Ruger.
Thanks all.

Remington doesnt have a very good track record with semi-auto's. I have seen enough 742/7400 Rem that were pretty much reduced to single shots to ever try another Remington Auto.(Unless its a 11-87 shot gun)
Remington still makes one of the finest bolt guns ever tho

If you spray a little rem oil down the barrel each morning they will work fine.
As far as semi auto goes, there as never been a better one made then the old rem. nylon 66 22. Except maybe the 10/22.
By the way I have a 597 17 hmr and the main trouble I have out of it is the spring in the clip is weak.

there is a design issue with the 597 and I cannot remember exactly what it is, but I've heard too many stories about its reliability for it to be a coincidence. I would take one of th previous poster's advice and try to trade it in for a Ruger. blowback autos tend to be finicky on the type of ammo you cycle through and I do believe that the 597 is worse than others with this problem as well. I love Remington's because they are usually extremely accurate, reliable and strong, but apparently this model isn't one of them.

My 597 jams with cheaper bulets, but with higher end shells it seems to cycle just fine.

I have two 597's and both can shoot pretty good.
But I have also had the same problem with both guns,as well as the spring in the clip.
The 10/22 is a better choice, and not had any issues with mine.

Been there and done that. The only result i saw was that the oil attracts dust particles and cause the gun to jam worse
