I say the 270 would because it is traveling much faster i would imagine. It has more case volume, so more powder to push that bullet.

I would say .270 as well. Larger bullet with a little more powder behind it.

.270 hands down. i am not sure what you are hunting, but if its deer or bigger game i am a .30 caliber fan. IMO grains kill.
later everyone.

sarge, i personally feel a .243 or anything smaller is for coyotes or prairie dogs. ballistic charts are great, but i like knockdown power.
by the way my old man is a gun nut and loves the .270 and the .243 and other (6mm)rounds.
my main rounds are .22 mag, 22-250, and .30 cal whether 06 or .308.
my two favorite guns are a wwII era m1garand and a new springfield m14. they will never let you down. awesome rifles.
later, matt.

Matt I have you thinking. a 243 has more impact energy at 100 yards than a 270 with the same grain of bullet

no, the bigger the grain of bullet the more knockdown power, especially at only a 100 yards. i like knockdown power. these big corn fed bucks around here will agree (LOL).
later sarge.

I would have to agree with the .270 If you are using two rounds with the same grain bullet, but one of the rounds has more powder behind it, I would think that the .270 would have a little more umpf behind it. I am by no means an expert on ballistics, but that is what I think. Taker easy Sarge.

The only way to compare the 243 and 270 with the same grain bullet is to load them with 100 grain bullets which is smallest you can get for the 270.It is better suited for smaller game like coyote, ground hogs, etc.I like using 140 grains for big game.

I look at that scenario like swinging a 16 oz. claw hammer and swinging a 5 lb. sledge. The claw hammer will go alot faster, but the sledge hits alot harder, and they both DEFINITELY have their place in different situations.. I've killed probably 40 deer with a .243, and about as many with a .270, but I bought the last deer rifle I will ever buy last year- a .270 WSM- by far the best all around caliber I've ever shot.

Ok, coleman that is a pretty good analogy, but I think Sarge was asking about two bullets of the same grain (ie 100 grain bullets in both the .243 and the .270), but I like your analogy, so I will try to put it in different terms that are a little more accurate to the argument. You have two guys with a 16oz hammer, and one guy weighs 150lbs and other guy weighs 200lbs. Now which one can swing that hammer harder?

I think the question, CAN you get the same grain of bullet? As far as I know, the heaviest slug you can get for a .243 is about a 105 gr and the smallest for the .270 is a 130 gr. At those weights, the .243 tops out at about 2400 Ft-lbs and the .270 tops out at about 2600 ft-lbs.
