I use a .22 but my friends friend used a shotgun and it took him 8 shots to kill it. He is pretty stupid.

I use a shotgun. At first it was because that's a rule where I hunt, but I've grown to like them. I've found a carefully aimed shot does wonders and is a quick kill. But it also means you are liable to not be able to take shots that you could easily take with a .17 HMR, since you need more surface area of the coon available (and the right surface area at that).

Nobody really shoots coons, and we don't really chase them with dogs- it's all a myth, so go back and tell your anti hunting buddies to leave us alone.

I have an old marlin .22 and try to keep it driving nails. If I see it it's dead meat. I mean if I were to shoot a coon. (Jamie)James Ramey.

The 410 GA. coming out of such a short barrel wouldn't reach the tops of most of these trees here. The .45 Colt round can't be used to take coon, besides that it's not a real accurate pistol in general, JMHO. I think those pistols were designed mostly to be carried for snakes, rats, & empty beer cans. fatherof4, those Marlins with the micro-groove barrels are very accurate little rifles, even when using the open sights. I've got a friend that's gunsmithed since the 1940's and he uses those barrels (gunsmithed) on a different receiver to shoot match with. He buys everyone he can get his hands on.

i agree that they are inaccurate but that was just a response to the shotgun only law, a bit of sarcasm. but on a real note my godfather has one with a bout a 12 inch barrel and he shoots buckshot out of it and i'll admit that it surprised me at the density at 15 steps i mean it was tight. i was shocked at what it did on paper out of a Saturday night special.
i think i would rather pack an ax or a crosscut saw than i would a long gun, they are just so cumbersome in the briars and vines. a buddy of mine always wants to carry a rifle, and he will alway hand it off for some reason or another. he'll find it next to the tree nearest to where handed it off next time he does that. im sticking to my s&w 617

I know what you mean ruff. I have a 522 Viper that I'm going to use with this pup of my son's, until she's used to that noise at the tree. Then I'm going to carry a Ruger MKIII Competition model. Deadly accurate pistol.

A shotgun is good to blast one out with some fight in em, but I would rather use a .22 so I can place more of a lethal shot.
