I don't, but I would feel bad for a coon that was shot with a pellet gun. I use a 20 gauge shotgun so the coon is being hit with a lot of shots, and I have to really consider the coon's height and where I'll be able to hit it as to whether or not it's a humane death--and that coon is being hit with a lot of little shots. I imagine if you have some fast kill dogs then the coon would die real fast (though knocking him out of the tree right away would be tricky with a pellet gun). I shot a coon right through the face once (after skinning it I saw some shots went right through the skull) and it knocked out of the tree instantly, but it didn't die instantly. I'm amazed at how tough they are, which means I am real careful about which ones I will shoot.

I've thought about the pellet gun thing a few times, they make some really power guns these days that can develop more energy than i 22lr. Some of them are super quiet too, i don't see what would be wrong if you bought one of the nicer more powerful ones not the ones i got from walmart as a kid.

i agree with blue geremine, for the price you can get a decent 22 rifle. unless discretion is your main concern the 22 rifle is the way to do. also, the pellet gun is heavier than the 22 rifle.

For years I used a .177 pellet gun to dispach trapped animals including coon at the time I lived in the citys the powerfull ones will dispach them as well as a .22 will but they cost more (at least the good ones) and if you plan on cleanly killing treed coons thats what you need so unless theres a reason you need to keep it quite go with a .22 then use some of the fur money to get a good pellet gun they do come in handy when a firearm will just upset the locals or cause you problems with disterbed landowners by the way there a some airguns out there that are well capable of taking even the largest game animals I own a .308 bandit (the price is about equial to a decent deer rifle) that will do the job on deer sized game and there are bigger and more powerfull ones out there for larger game

more expensive to buy the pellet rifle maybe true. you can get even 177 caliber pellet guns that will rival a 22 long rifle the only differnence is the loudness of the report and which one has the cheaper ammo ...around here you can pick up a decent high power pellet gun for the same price as a decent 22 lr which is bout 200 bucks pellets are half the price of 22 rimfire ammo and you get a hell of a lot more pellets then you do 22 shells

There was a n ad in Cabela's a while back that had a picture of a guy that killed a wild hog with a Gamo air rifle. I'll look it up, but I'm pretty sure they said it was featured on a hunting show. I'll dig it up and find the guy's name and model of air rifle he used.

preditor magazine had an article an issue or so ago that talked about states oking it to use a 177 or 22 cal air rifle to take coyote on through small game. they also talked a little about that pellet shotgun. The point of that, dunno. But if you are still set on using a pellet gun cheaper than dirt has some for under $100 that have 1100 fps. Use that new PBA ammo and youll gain 20%
