 Post subject: fixing shotgun's stock

I broke/splintered the stock of my shotgun right up at the base near the trigger. All the metal parts seem fine, so I'm sure it'd shoot right and all, but the stock is now crooked. I don't have any money to do any real fixing, so I'm looking for a way to jimmy rig it. What, if any, kind of glue would one use? Some of the splintered chunks are gone, so it'll always look pretty dumpy. If I have to shoot it with a crooked stock that'd be fine, but it would be nice to do something. Any ideas?

The only glue I use to fix shotgun stocks with is epoxy. I use the long setting kind.
Does it look like the break is on a part of the stock that takes recoil? It is does, you will want to reinforce the repair with some hardwood dowls. The only time this won't work is on a very thin part of a stock and generally those are not load bearing areas. Just get some 1/4" stock cut a piece 1-2" long (depending on the placement of the dowls and location of the crack) open up the crack drill two hole on each side of the crack to fit the dowls, then glue the entire thing together.

Take the stock off the receiver and mix the epoxy thoroughly. Don't use the quick set as it will harden long before you are ready. coat the surfaces well and immediately wipe the excess. use either an old inner tube or surgical tubing to hold it all together. Work slowly, work carefully and take your time. Don't be in a hurry for it to dry, let it dry at least 36 hours and it'll be stronger than the original wood.

Oh yea, before I forget, make sure the gluing surfaces are CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN, very important.

The break doesn't extent to the end of the stock, it's mainly where my right hand is in the picture. It runs vertical down the stock, so I'm sure if I don't do anything and keep shooting the gun it'd eventually hit the butt. Epoxy glue, is that something you get at a sporting goods store or something you buy at a hardware store?

Hardware Store. Don't get the quick set, get the longer setting stuff. It is stronger. mix it according to the directions. Use a plastic knife and a paper plate to mix it because once you do, they are pretty much done. coat the finish of the stock with vaseline so that if you get any run off it will clean up. apply and clamp with either an old inner tube or something similar. Use just a little bit, just enough to coat the crack. try to avoid run off as much as you can. Let it set for at least a day and then clean up the grease you laid down.

You don't say what the manufacturer is. The shotgun in the photo looks like a mossberg. Several manufacturers make stocks to replace yours (if it is a mossberg) I think they run about 49 dollars. you'd be better off replacing that stock in stead of trying to patch that wood stock in the weak spot.
