What is the best black powder rifle that will hold the magnum loads? Someone told me that the Savage was a good 1 because you could shoot smokeless powder in it! Looking to buy something!! Don't know much about the black powder guns!!

I think Thompson Center makes the best black powder guns. If you are thinking of using smokeless powder in a muzzle loader, don't. You will not like the results. What you are probably referring to are a number of black powder arms that can be converted to shoot smokeless rounds. A number of companies make convertible rifles, including T/C.

The Savage would use smokless powder, but I had heard they worked better with Black or pyrodex.

I don' t know of any other muzzleloaders that could use smokeless.

I checked the Savage Catalog and yea, it says you can shoot smokeless powders out of it. I'm not particularly crazy about that though. Somebody will invariably will try to use pistol powder ot something like that and blow the damn thing up.

H4198 is a short stick type powder that is about in the middle of the burn rate scale. So you would not want to use ball or flake power, which burn much faster in it.
