i visited a local gun shop today. i asked the man which hi=powered round was most popular. he said the 7.62. i asked about the different lengths and he said the 7.60 x 39 is the most popular and cheapest. i went to ammoman.com and found he was right. yet, as i understand it, the nato round is the 7.62 x 51, .308. i thought the nato round would be cheapest since it would be in use by all the nato countries. what's up with this?
if i get a dooms day rifle, i want to get it in a caliber that is most popular, yet cheap too. are these two attributes, cheap and popular, not related?

the 7,62x39 is the cheapest because most of the ammo is either made in Russia or is eastern European surplus.

Watch out because some of that old ammo have corrosive primers.

The new Russian ammo is all non corrosive. if you happen run across that Yugoslavian surplus, odds are it is older issue and almost certainly corrosive.

There is nothing wrong with using corrosive primered ammo. Just make darn sure you clean your gun thoroughly after each use. What happens is that the priming material they use forms a salt after detonation. This salt attracts moisture and it is that moisture that causes corrosion.

the same thing as using a black powder rifle.
