The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the government agency charged with assuring the safety and health of America's workers, is proposing a regulatory rule affecting the manufacturing, transportation and storage of small arms ammunition, primers and smokeless propellants.

As written, the proposed rule would force the closure of nearly all ammunition manufacturers and force the cost of small arms ammunition to skyrocket beyond what the market could bear—essentially collapsing our industry. This is not an exaggeration. The cost to comply with the proposed rule for the ammunition industry, including manufacturer, wholesale distributors and retailers, will be massive and easily exceed $100 million. For example, ammunition and smokeless propellant manufacturers would have to shut down and evacuate a factory when a thunderstorm approached and customers would not be allowed within 50 feet of any ammunition (displayed or otherwise stored) without first being searched for matches or lighters.

NSSF and SAAMI have already had a preliminary meeting with OSHA officials to begin the process of explaining to them the major problems this proposed rule presents for all levels of the firearms and ammunition industry. Furthermore, NSSF and SAAMI are each seeking a 60 day extension of the public comment period (currently scheduled to expire July 12).

NSSF is urging all retailers to contact OSHA directly and request a 60-day extension of the public comment period. Retailers should inform OSHA that the proposed rule constitutes a "significant regulatory action" as defined in Executive Order 12866 (1993) Section 3(f)(1) in that it will clearly "adversely affect in a material way" the retail sector of the firearms and ammunition industry, productivity, competition and jobs and that the annual compliance cost for all retailers of ammunition will far exceed $100 million dollars.

RE: Docket No. OSHA–2007–0032
Request to Extend Public Comment Period and Request for Hearing on
"Significant Regulatory Action" as Defined in Executive Order 12866

Please fax the letter to: 202-693-1648 (include the docket number and Department of Labor/OSHA on the cover sheet and in the reference section of your letter).

Please e-mail the letter by visiting: http://www.regulations.gov and following the submission instructions.

This will pretty much kill the firearms industry. I swear this was the intent of this rule. Please go to this website and contact your senator and have them address this as well.

You know I was sitting here thinking after I read this, this country is going to hell in a hand basket.Sooner or later I bet you our goverment is going to have the right to say what kind & what color of clothes we have to wear. Then probably end up charging $300 for the shirts & pants.I wonder what they are going to do about the military small arms?I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut by god they won't be short of ammunition at any time.I'm not coming down on the military don't get me wrong.I just think a lot of things that goes on in this country is BS.

Sorry if I ruined your post buckshot but I couldn't hold it back anymore.

for the most part, I can't say as I disagree with you, but I will say we are not helpless to stop it. Look at that idiotic illegal alien amnesty bill. We sure killed that. We can kill this, too. Contact your senators, go to the website and follow on how you can post comments (I did). Put enough pressure on these weenies and we can set things right.

You bet it would. Most ammunition made in North America Comes from the Good Ol' US of A. That means any expense would be passed on to all customers.
About the only things that wouldn't would be European or Asian made munitions imported directly into Canada.

I sent my letters. I hope everyone writes their senators and representatives about this.
Also the link provided above is another place to write your comments.

I saw that in an email I received. This is good news. THis whole action actually made Rush Limbaugh's show yesterday. Rush was speculating that this was snuck in by some anti-gun whackos for the very purpose to close down the firearms industry. Of course OSHA denies it, but remember, these rules and regulations are drawn up by lawyers, so wording is chosen very carefully.

This is a good example of why it is a good idea to be a member of the NRA and to contribute whatever you can to those organizations that help defend our rights and heritage. They help stay vigilant against this very thing and give us a loud voice in which to respond.
