what is the difference in these two cartridges??

The major differences are, in a word, lighter slug weights and smaller powder charges in the 22 long. Generally Long rifle have from 30-60 gr slugs and the long have no more than a 29 gr slug. Propellants vary, but the long generally have no more than 5 grs of powder.

Less velocity and range, but yea, they are close to each other.

The longrifle is a little longer than the the long. This is why the longs don't feed properly in a gun marked longrifle only.

The opposite is true too, you should not try to force 22LR into a chamber marked 22 long only.

I said they were close. They aren't exact.
