For a 45ACP, I would recommend either a Springfield XD or a Paraord. paraord are really well made but I also have a soft spot for those XD's. I hear lots of good things about them.

My MDOT issued sidearm is a Glock 9mm, model 17. My personal sidearm for home defense is a Ruger SP 101 is .357 Mag. I'm still stuck in the revolver mode for my personal handguns.

I would consider a revolver. Smith & wesson used to make a model 25-A in .45acp. It uses moon clips. I seen a nice one at the gun show not too long ago for a good price, I almost bought it. I prefer the .45 LC to the ACP in revolver myself. It's easier to reload for.
For doomsday I'd be thinking rifles and pistols as a second thought.

the only reason i'm considering the 45acp is because i already have the 1911. i want to stock up on ammunition and don't want to bother with stocking two different calibers and if i get the 9mm for my wife, i'll either have to buy myself a 9mm or have to stock two different caliber ammucnition. based on what i just said, what do you think?

Mel, it's called the "Lady Smith" and yes, they still make it.

Comparably speaking 9mm ammo is cheap to buy. I don't think stocking up on .45acp and/or 9mm will be too expensive.
I'd be more concerned with which calibre your wife shoots the best than which ammo is cheaper.
Since we're talking doomsday scenarios, I think about getting afew parts for that 1911 such as springs and magazines too.

You can't beat a Glock 17.
