regular single shot 22 is all use...22 mags are too expensive, so are 17's...i wouldn't want to carry a 17 in the woods and scratch it up

17 and mag is way to much power..they rip the hide. 22lr werks great and inexpensive. and uasally lighter gun too.

I don't know from experince but I think the .17HR2 would be a great gun for your purpose.

luke to answer your question i use the 22mag it wacks em hard.we have big corn fed coon out here in nebraska.during kill season we have shot a lot of boar coons that weigh up to 35pounds.a regular 22 works good but it is nice to wack them once and hard.the only downfall is they are loud.the 17 tears them up to bad.hope this helps

I have used a .22 mag from time to time. The CCI (or any other brand) SOLID point FMJ type bullets do not do much damage to the pelt from what I have seen. They hit them hard though.

ive got a 17 MR and itll tear something up! if you want to kill em and dont care about the hide, use the hollow points in the head.

but a 22 short will knock em out sos the dogs can kill em. a 22lr is good too...
