also semi atuos' are high maintence if you want it to shoot and load smoothly , ive got a .17 HMR savage bolt action and love it ...maybe try considering a lever action they can be just as fast as a semi auto
i dont think you would really need a semi auto in .17 they are a pretty accurate on calm days or low wind and they almost explode after in the skin i used it on a coon one day in the middle of coon season and it barely made a mark on t he outside but made the shoulder a soup of chunks of bone blood and muscle no exit hole!
hope this helps

A Henry Golden Boy Lever gun is pretty nice if having a semi is not crucial. if having a semi is that important I would suggest an excel.

Yougmiller I just bought a Savage 17HMR bolt action with a BSA Sweet 17 scope on it. I've been breaking in the barrel carefully and have it almost sighted in. I think it is going to be a nice setup for what I want it for. How do you like the Accu Trigger?

lol my rifles stock with a good 3-9 variable its not all that bad all in all savage makes guns for a cheap price but its stilll reliable and accurate i believe its a nice safety feature for deep in the bush or for young shooters lol 90 percent of my guns are savage the only ones that arent are my shotgun(bakial) and my .223 wssm (browning)
what do you think of it

The savages look good now, too. If you ever seen the old 1899's they look like 2x4's with barrels stuck on them!

Bubba I didn't care much for the older savage rifles looks either. Youngmiller this is the first Savage I have bought and must confess that I haven't formed a full opinion of the accu trigger yet. Usually the first thing I do with a new rifle is lighten up the trigger pull, however this one is just fine and crisp out of the box. Not only that it has to be one of the easier ones to adjust. So far I have had no problems with the features of the trigger while shooting. I have to agree with you about the price to. I think for the quality built in to the rifle Savage rifles are a bargain.

The new models really are underrated. They even make a full line of lefthanded rifles, too and that scores points with me.

I've had a Marlin 917V .17HMR since 2004 and it's a great shooting gun.
(Bolt action)
A semi-auto would be nice but I'd be prone to shoot more and with the cost of .17HMR ammo, I'd have to get a loan at the bank after about two weeks.

I like the new Savage with the accu trigger. My cousin is big into varmint rifles. He has a Les Baer AR-15, and has recently bought a Savage. He says it is amazing how you can spend $3000+ on tricking out an AR-15, when you could have just spent $500 for the Savage and have just as good of accuracy. All in what you like i guess

remington is hard to beat...mine puts every shot in a dime at 50 yds...my dads friend is a gunsmith and said that it is the most accurate 17 he has seen better than his 1300$ 17

Remingtons are hard to beat, that is for sure. Take a good look at the browning levers, too. I bought a used one and it'll drive dimes at 50 yards no problem and will never leave the black at 100.
Semi auto rimfires tend to be incredibly finicky what kind of ammo they will like. I know a guy who buys the CCI mini mags from me by the case because it is the only ammo his autoloader will cycle. Another fellow only buys Federal Gold Medals because anything else will miss a barn at 50 yds. That is why I like bolt actions and levers. I'll buy bricks of the cheapest thing in the catalog and It will work without problems.

The Marlin bolt guns have really been exceptional. The 17v's were dirt cheap ($170) and with a good quality scope and trigger job could easily shoot inside 3/4 inch at a 100 yards with Hornady varmint extreme 17g vmaxes once they were broken in. The newer 917's were right there with them, then the Savages. You had to have a good setup and be a good shot to tell the difference.
The more expensive guns could not beat the accuracy and the Ruger and Remington auto loaders had a really hard time competing in a prairie dog town past 100 yards. I have seen some Volqartsons do fairly well.
Just what I have seen.....
