In modern rifles is is leagal to use a rifle as small as a .222 remington. With muzzle loaders if I remember correctly a .45 cal. is the smallest legal. I have shot most of mine with a Hawkin type muzzle loader in 50 calibur and round ball which works well. Most of the modern rifles tear them up way to bad if you do any more than crease them across the back.
