For short action, I guess it depends on what you want to take down. It's been interesting to see the development of new short action rounds. I, personally, was hoping to see a "suped-up" round with the .243 WSSM (Winchester Super Short Mag.)... But frankly, it didn't meet my expectations. I'd rather shoot my old .243 and pay less for reloading costs than mess with it.. I have found hope in the higher calibers being able to have good velocity and knock-down power paired with less of a stretch on your arm. I believe that the .300 WSM is a great round. They were able to keep high velocity with a SA round, and is more effective in my experience then Remington's .300 RSAUM. I was less then impressed with the 7mm WSM but know people who enjoy it... For the smaller game, the .270 WSM has become more popular along with the .25 WSM. Personally, among the SA rounds... I like the .325 WSM, which has proven a worthy adversary of elk and large game. It has the velocity of a .300 win mag with the knock down power of a .338. The Kimber Montana model is pretty awesome... All the same, I'll stick with my Remington .300 Ultra Mag cause I like to reach out and touch the elk when no one else can. :) The length of pull on the action doesn't bother me cause the accuracy of this rifle makes it so there's rarely a need for another shot!
